In Part 1 of our cord-cutting series we talked about one of our first targets in our continuing effort to target budget mosquitoes – little bloodsuckers that slowly put a drain on your savings. We’ve decided to get out of our Dish contract (boo early termination fee) to save us money in the long run (yay saving money!). We really don’t watch enough to to justify paying $70/month for it. One line item in our budget ripe for trimming is our “TV/streaming” category. As part of our post-marriage “financial honeymoon” we had a weak moment where we convinced ourselves that since we had two incomes, we could “afford” to get a TV package. Hockey season was right around the corner, I was ready to not have to deal with laggy internet streaming, and we live just far enough away from ...

Financial independence is when your passive income exceeds your expenses –when your savings and investments are making you more money than you spend. There is no one magic path to follow, but the journey boils down to three things: spend less, save more, earn more.  I won’t get into the math of FI in this post, but I’ll paraphrase an analogy I’ve heard: Financial independence is like saving $750,000 to purchase ...

Little things add up!   I live fairly close to work, about 7 miles, 90% highway. I often go home to eat lunch. It gets me out of the office while avoiding the temptation of consuming expensive & unhealthy fast food or work cafeteria food. I can also let BudgetBeagle out to go potty, and sometimes see Mrs. BudgetBeagle for lunch if she has the day off. Sounds like a pretty frugal ...

Well hello there! This is Mrs. Budgetbeagle! You may have heard of me in Mr. Budgetbeagles posts. I’ve never been the best at writing but I guess when I start putting my thoughts on paper it kinda just flows. But writing a blog post is very new to me. Trying new things can be a good thing though. I’m so excited to start! I figured that I’d start out by introducing ...

Some people start off with nothing. Hard to believe that they’re the lucky ones, right? I won’t dwell on the past too much, but everyone has to acknowledge that times have changed. The costs of a college education continue to rise faster than inflation. The chance to start out at 0 is a dream for many young adults today. Mrs. BudgetBeagle was able to live at home after graduating from college, ...

At the beginning of this year we had been married for about 6 months, and we thought things were going pretty well. In reality, we eventually started to realize that we had been on a “financial honeymoon” on which we formed a few bad habits. Instead of being financially vigilant, we had been making a few assumptions and had gotten lazy. I think that after we got married, we let a ...

Life is about finding happiness. There are two things I am certain about: I don’t want to be a cubicle-drone for the rest of my life I want to live a good life and provide for my family One question: can I do both?   A popular saying goes: “a picture is worth a thousand words.” A good story can have a similar impact to a picture. A story can be used in the same way ...
