We’ve just had one of our team who was due to start back after maternity leave next Monday decide that she’s not coming back. I don’t blame her. I loved being with my babies and I was fortunate that from a money perspective, I didn’t have to go back to work. I then ended up having two babies in fairly quick succession. It was over 3.5 years from when I ...

When I was growing up, some good friends of ours always had lodgers in their home as we lived near a university. Mature students kept themselves to themselves and were always gone for the holidays when the children were off school. It was a win, win situation! Have you ever thought about renting out your spare room to generate extra income' You can earn up to £7,500 a year under ...

I hope everyone is set for a great week with the kids this week. We have lots of fun things planned with a stay from the grandparents, catching up with friends and just enjoying not having to get up with an alarm on our days off! January’s over and we are in to February! Not one of my favourite months after the excitement of December and when it’s dark and freezing still. But I am loving the afternoons getting longer – I can see Spring in my sights! I did set myself a challenge in January to better plan our meals and I think this has really helped me get through the worst month of the ...

When I decided to return to work, one of the biggest shocks was the cost of childcare. We have luckily benefited from Childcare Vouchers to help pay our nursery fees. Every bit of help working families get towards these often-substantial bills is welcomed. We are fortunate that we are signed up and will continue to receive Childcare Vouchers, but they will be stopped for new registrations soon. I am concerned ...

With parents facing bills approaching £230,000 to raise just one child to the age of 21, budgeting is something you’d be wise to think about from the early days. The word “budget” evokes in many a feeling of fear as they just don’t know where to begin, especially with so much to buy in the early days of parenting. There is no way around it though, especially when a little ...

Matched betting is a great side hustle and one of my favourites; it’s risk-free and a simple way to earn tax-free money. When I started last year, there was a niggle at the back of my mind though as we were considering re-mortgaging. I wondered if matched betting would affect our mortgage application, especially because we were enquiring with a different lender. While they know it sounds appealing, I’ve had ...

The third Friday in January, known as ‘Fail Friday’ or ‘Quitter’s day’, is the day by which most New Year’s resolutions have been thrown out the window! The thing about healthy eating regimes or exercise goals is that you actually have to keep at them every day and people lose motivation quickly. By contrast, it’s ridiculously easy to keep to money new year’s resolutions! This is mainly because so many ...
