Call it what you want—a sabbatical, a gap year, a vacation, a mini-retirement, a time to come together, a mid-life crisis—we are moving to Nicaragua, and it is going to be epically awesome. And we’re leaving next week. Just…why? Why? We’ve been getting this question a lot lately. Simply put, it is our dream. It’s been a dream of mine for at least 15 years. When my doctor told me they had found cancerous cells in my thyroid (I didn’t know what a thyroid was either), it didn’t seem like that big of a deal. He told me it was the “good” cancer and fairly easy to treat. A few weeks later, they took out my thyroid. Hello amigos, I am still alive! It is time for a much overdue post-summer update. Lots of big things happening. I started a new job, we finally opened bank accounts for the kids, we’ve earned hundreds of thousands of hotel points, and we had another baby. Rethinking the blog Remember that girl (or boy) you were so [Read more...] ...

Oh hello. I’m still here. Question. How would you like to be trained for a new job by someone who’s just been laid off and told that you are replacing them…and for more pay? Anyone? That’s what I’ve been up to over the last few weeks. There have been many things happening in the bare [Read more...] ...

Today’s post comes from Chris at Eat the Financial Elephant. Mark and I first started sharing e-mails about exchanging guest posts after I linked his post about tithing 10% of their family’s income.  I used his post to help refute some of the many myths in mainstream thinking about why it is difficult to retire [Read more...] ...

There has been a trend of late to distance oneself from the usage of the traditional budget. It usually starts like this: “You may find this hard to believe, but I don’t budget…”  And then they go on to say why it is that they omit one of the most fundamental steps for financial success. [Read more...] ...

I recently announced that I would start featuring some of the budget profiles submitted to my site, including those of fellow bloggers. For those of you who may be new to this site, I encourage others to bare their budgets so we can all benefit by seeing how everyone else is (or isn’t) making it. It has been an [Read more...] ...

The week before Christmas, I learned my boss was going to be out of town for the entire following week. So what did we do? We went on a spontaneous family trip to Washington DC of course! And we did it on the cheap. Amanda had never been to the capital before despite it being so [Read more...] ...

What type of licensed professional do you get when you combine expertise in financial planning, tax, auditing, and business strategy? Hint: It’s not this guy… CPAs do it all CPAs are no longer just tax preparers, book keepers, or number crunchers. Though they might end up specializing in a certain area, they are trained to [Read more...] ...

Put down that pencil! Before you go and solidify your goals for the new year by writing them down, take a minute to think about what you really want. Goals may only theoretically reflect things that are important to us. I say “theoretically” because when we take more time for further introspection, we may find [Read more...] ...
